As Tech Layoffs Pass 149,000, Regalis Capital Sees Corporate Professionals Buy Businesses Instead of Starting Them

Challenger counts 149,023 tech job cuts so far this year, up 67%, and Regalis Capital says about half of its buyers are displaced corporate professionals.

DOVER, DE, UNITED STATES, September 4, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ -- Technology employers have announced 149,023 job cuts so far this year, up 67% from the same stretch last year, according to outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas. Regalis Capital, a done-for-you business acquisition service working with 150+ active buyers at any time, says about half of its buyers are corporate professionals who left or lost a senior job and decided to own an established company rather than build one from nothing.

Challenger publishes a monthly tally of announced US job cuts. Its latest report puts technology cuts through July at 149,023, against 89,251 through the same month last year. The same report attributes 101,743 cuts to employers naming artificial intelligence as the reason.

What those numbers describe, in the Regalis Capital read, is a large group of experienced operators looking for a next move at the same moment. A displaced director or vice president usually arrives with budget responsibility, hiring experience, vendor management, and a working understanding of a profit and loss statement. What they do not arrive with is customers. That single gap is why the firm sees more of them buying instead of starting.

An established company comes with the parts a new venture spends years assembling: a customer base, trained staff, suppliers, and a documented history a lender can underwrite. Acquisitions in the $1,000,000 to $10,000,000 range are typically financed with an SBA 7(a) loan, a seller note, and the buyer's own equity, and the SBA program exists so that an operator can take over a going concern with a minimum 10% equity injection rather than the full purchase price in cash. The work is in choosing the right company and getting the structure right, not in proving that ownership is reachable.

"People leaving a corporate job keep asking what business they should start. That is the much harder version of the question," said the Regalis Capital team. "There are companies for sale right now with real customers, trained staff, and 10 or 20 years of history behind them, and the skills that got somebody promoted are the exact skills those companies need on day one."

The firm's guidance to professionals in transition is to size the search to what a lender will finance before falling in love with an industry, and to treat the first 90 days as research rather than shopping. Buyers who define the target first move faster once a real opportunity shows up.

Anyone weighing ownership can size a purchase with the free Regalis Capital Deal Value Calculator at dealvaluecalc.regaliscapital.com, which estimates purchase price, the required equity injection, and monthly debt service. It is free, needs no signup, and is not an offer of credit. Regalis Capital is not a lender; financing terms are set by a third party lender and vary by borrower and deal.
